Managers are to train workers concerning the importance of limiting flies access to the manure In the
barns by keeping the doors closed at all times. Other openings that allow flies access to the manure are
to be closed off or screened as appropriate and managers are to include an awareness of this in
scheduling their maintenance work.
If it becomes apparent that fly breeding is taking place and larvae are present in the manure, facility
managers are to immediately implement spraying of insecticides to eliminate flies in both the adult and
larvae stages. Possible sprays include malathion, pyrethrins, dursban, tempo, diazinon and others.
Several baits to lure and kill flies are also available, both commercial brands and homemade recipes.
Personnel will inspect each building perimeters daily for traces of water leakage. Any stagnant water or
excess water from floors or from washing houses will be either covered by wood shavings or gravel, or
worked out thoroughly to facilitate adequate rapid drying.
During time of inclement weather, manure pickups need to be coordinated with hauler so that manure
Is not taken out of the barn prior to commitment from hauler to take manure within 7 days. Prior to
taking manure out of the building, employees will make sure that ground is draining towards south end
of property and no water accumulation has been noticed (potholes larger than 3 feet In diameter).
Grounds will be maintained in such a way to facilitate drainage towards the ditch (canal) where possible,
excess water will be pumped out.
Temporary Storage of Dead Animals:
Employees will collect dead animals on a daily and/or as needed basis. The dead animals will be stored
in a freezer and taken on a weekly basis or as needed to the processing plant for disposal. All ranch
managers must report immediately to the maintenance team If their freezer breaks down. The
maintenance team Is to also inspect the freezer monthly to ensure equipment is working properly.
Training:
The single greatest weapon managers can employ In the battle against fly infestation is the thorough
education of workers. If the workers understand what attracts flies, promotes breeding, and understand
their continued employment Is contingent on eliminating these problems, the problems will vanish with
the flies.
Managers are responsible for teaching their workers about attraction, feeding, and breeding traits of
flies, by showing them how to avoid creating these conditions and how to eliminate any existing fly
breeding conditions. Workers are expected to report evidence of fly breeding conditions that need
immediate attention to their supervisors.
Summary:
1, Load manure into trucks as soon as possible,
Cover manure & spray for insects when truck loading is not possible,
After cleaning a barn, all manure must be removed within 7 days.
All residual manure from cleaning operation must be cleaned up within a 7 day window
beginning at time of removal.
