Chemotherapy waste including trace amounts (discard in a yellow Chemotherapy Waste container) <br />2. All intact unit -dose and partial bulk containers of outdated Schedule II, 111, 1V, and V controlled drugs <br />3. Batteries ( see Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Plan, Universal Waste; Batteries). <br />4. IV solutions containing only saline, lactate, dextrose, vitamins, or added salts such as potassium <br />and/or other electrolytes without any patient -identifying information (discard solution down drain; <br />discard bag in regular trash). <br />5. Empty IV bags (containing trace amounts of drug) without patient -identifying information (discard in <br />regular trash). <br />6. Unused or expired medications still in their original packaging (return to materials management). <br />7. Pressurized inhalers and aerosols, also refrigerated drugs that were not at proper temperature <br />(contact and send to Materials Management). <br />8. Empty drug packaging without any patient -identifying information (discard in regular trash). <br />9. Biologicals, including sera, vaccines; antigens, antitoxins, (discard in red hazardous waste <br />container). <br />10. defer to the Hazardous Materials policy(s) for'instructions on those substances. <br />Collection & Transportation: <br />Environmental Services Department staff is responsible!for the collection, transport, and replacement of <br />all pharmaceutical waste containers throughout the facility.. <br />a. Pharmaceutical waste containers will be collected when 3/ full or when the container indicates a "full <br />status". <br />b. Before collection and transportation, pharmaceutical waste containers will be closed and secured <br />following the manufacturer's directions, by clinical staff. <br />c. Full pharmaceutical waste containers will be kept in each unit's dirty utility room or equivalent until <br />picked up by Environmental Services staff. <br />d. Contact Environmental Services when collection, transport, and exchange of pharmaceutical waste <br />containers are needed. <br />e. Collection, transport, and exchange of pharmaceutical waste container service by Environmental <br />Services staff will be available daily as needed. <br />f. All pharmaceutical waste will be collected, transported, and stored with other types of medical waste <br />by Environmental Services staff in a designated storage area pending receipt and transport off-site <br />by a licensed, registered waste hauler. <br />g. The pharmaceutical waste storage area will be secured to deny and prevent access by unauthorized <br />persons. <br />h. The storage area will be clearly posted with warning signs reading "CAUTION-BIOHAZARDOUS <br />WASTE STORAGE AREA -UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT"; and in Spanish "CUIDADO- <br />Pharmaceutical Waste.
