Box 6336
Stockton, Ca 95206
Attention: Mr. Greg Basso
SUBJECT: COMMENTS REGARDING WMU D-88 AND
TEMPORARY LEACHATE POND
FORWARD, INC. LANDFILL/AUSTIN ROAD
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA
Gentlemen:
This letter is in response to a letter dated March 21, 1989 from Mr. Steve
Rothenbaum of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (CRWQCB)
regarding the final slope configuration for the trench at Waste Management Unit D-88
(WMU D-88). In particular there has been concern regarding the west wall of the
trench which was constructed at a near vertical scope immediately adjacent to WMU E.
Concern has been expressed regarding trucks traveling to WMU E possibly overloading
the slope and causing a slope failure.
Based upon our observations of the trench wall, it appears as though the wall is
comprised of a compact clay silt to silty- clay material with minor sand lenses.
Excavations in this material are typically very stable due to the partly cemented
nature of the soil.
Our observations were made several months after completion of the liner of WMU D-88
and no excessive sloughing or indications of slope failure were evident either on the
slope itself or near the road at the top of the slope. Based upon our experience and
observations, it is our opinion that the slope appears to be stable and at this point.
KLEINFELDER 2825 East Myrtle Street, Stockton, CA 95205 (209) 948-1345
