11 k KLEINFELDER
File No.: 20-2578-01
October 17, 1989
Page 2
If in the future noticeable sloughing or cracks at the surface at the top of the slope
begin to appear, we recommend that activities in the area of the slope be suspended
until further analysis can be performed.
We have also been asked to comment regarding WMU F which was constructed to
receive landfill leachate. This is a temporary surface impoundment located west of
the existing WMU E. Concern has been raised regarding the cracks along the top of
interior and exterior sides of the levee. Based upon our observations, it appears as
though this material is excess material that was not compacted at the time of
construction.
When constructing slopes it is common practice to overbuild the slopes in order to
ensure compaction of the design section. Conversations with Gary Aksland, contractor
for this project, has confirmed this observation. The levee was constructed according
to the design section as called for ,in the plans and the overbuilt part was never
neatly trimmed off. This excess material is what is beginning to slough off the sides.
A probe inserted into the slough material revealed that firm material is approximately
12 to 18 inches below the surface. Since the material that is sloughing is excess
uncompacted material, it is our opinion that the levee as constructed is stable and
therefore no remedial action needs to be taken regarding the stability of this levee.
We trust this letter present the requesting information and if you have any questions
required further assistance please contact Qur office.
H
Respectfully Submitted,
KLEINFELDER, INC. - -
Patrick C.
