1. Introduction
C:\TRICH\Jobs\4515582 Leprino Tracy\Report\Leprino Tracy CalARP 040221.docx 1-2
The facility is located at 2401 N. MacArthur Drive, Tracy, CA. The plant specializes in
cheese processing that requires refrigeration. Figure 1-2 and 1-3 show plans of the
facility with areas containing ammonia system equipment highlighted and identified.
Anhydrous ammonia is used in a refrigeration cycle to provide cooling for food
processing. The ammonia system consists of compressor units for NH3, condensers,
product sub-coolers, evaporators, storage vessels, and interconnecting piping (see
Chapter 3 and Appendix C).
The following design record drawings were available for review.
• Leprino Foods Company, Tracy Plant Layout, September 3, 2020 (Reference 8)
• Leprino Foods, Tracy, California Facility, Ammonia Refrigeration System Piping
& Instrument Diagrams, April 25, 2008 to March 30, 2018 (Reference 9)
Based on these drawings along with information on the equipment U-1A (Manufacturer
Data Report for Pressure Vessels) forms and observed equipment placards, the
ammonia system was designed using various editions of the building code; however, the
earliest edition would be the 1973 Uniform Building Code (UBC, Reference 5). Existing
facilities, which have had previous CalARP seismic assessments are required to update
and revalidate their assessment at least every five years. Any portion of the previous
assessment may be used for the current revalidation assessment if deemed appropriate
by the Responsible Engineer. The extent of the seismic revalidation depends on many
factors. Some conditions that may result in a partial or new assessment of the facility
include:
• New significant active faults discovered near the facility which cause a major
increase in the estimated ground motions, or other seismic hazards
• System modifications that would significantly affect the seismic behavior of the
equipment or system, such as changing or addition of process equipment
• The occurrence of an earthquake that has caused significant damage in the local
vicinity of the facility since the last assessment
