County of San Joaquin Dept of Public Works IIPP Rev 2020-01-31.docx <br /> Page 58 <br /> <br /> <br />2.6.5 Prevention of Heat Illness <br />In order to minimize heat illness affecting Department employees the <br />following steps shall be taken: <br /> Employees shall receive annual training on the risks of working outdoors in <br />high heat, <br /> Employees shall be reminded of heat illness and recovery periods at the <br />tailgate meeting at the beginning of the shift, <br /> Ample water and rest breaks shall be provided on all work days with the <br />temperature exceeding 80º F. <br /> Supervisors and lead personnel shall monitor workers during the shift for <br />signs of heat illness. Affected employees shall be directed to take at least a <br />five (5) minute break in the shade. <br /> Employees newly assigned to high heat areas shall be closely observed by a <br />supervisor or designee for the first 14 days of employment <br />2.6.6 Acclimatization Procedures <br /> If employee has not worked outdoors in the heat in the last week, begin a <br />program to phase in a modified work schedule outside with increasing <br />duration and effort. <br /> It usually takes 4-14 days to fully acclimatize to the outdoor temperature <br /> Supervisors need to be extra vigilant with employees during this time. <br /> <br />2.6.7 Factors affecting tolerance to heat <br /> Environment – conditions such as heat, humidity, wind, etc. <br /> Personal Risk Factors – physical condition, acclimatization, hydration levels, <br />etc. <br /> <br />2.6.8 Emergency Medical Services Procedures <br />The following procedures shall be employed to ensure medical services can be provided, <br />if needed for an emergency: <br /> Upon arriving at the work site the supervisor or lead personnel are to ensure <br />that they have the ability to identify the site, and directions to it, should <br />emergency services be required. <br /> Any employee suffering from, or suspected to be suffering from heat illness <br />shall be moved to shade and provided water to drink.
