DEUEL VOCATIONAL INSTITUTION <br />No. 157 - OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE - Medical Waste Management Plan <br />V. Methods -Continued <br />B. Handling Medical Waste <br />1. Prior to handling any medical waste bags, containers or receptacles, <br />appropriate clothing shall be put on. Disposable gloves, masks and <br />aprons shall be maintained in all areas generating medical waste. <br />2. All medical waste shall be placed into red biohazard bags labeled with <br />the words "Biohazard Waste" or with the international symbol and word <br />"Biohazard". These bags must be impervious to moisture and have <br />strength sufficient to preclude ripping, tearing or bursting under normal <br />use and handling. All waste which has been placed into a red bag <br />shall be considered to be medical waste. The bags shall be double tied <br />to prevent spillage in the event a bag is dumped upside down. Sharps <br />containers shall be labeled with the words "Sharps Waste" or with the <br />international biohazard symbol and the word "Biohazard". <br />3. Containers shall be of a rigid puncture resistant material that when <br />sealed is leak resistant and not able to be reopened without great <br />difficulty. Small red plastic bags shall be located in each area <br />generating medical waste. <br />4. Pharmaceutical waste containers will be secured in areas that are not <br />accessible to inmates. Each container must be clearly labeled with the <br />current date (when put into service) and the expiration date. When the <br />waste container becomes 3/ full; a Supervising Registered Nurse II <br />(SRN -II) will remove from the wall and give to janitorial services for <br />removal. The container from the medical clinical areas will be <br />transported and put inside the containers located in the Outpatient <br />Housing Unit (OHU). If janitorial services are not available, nursing <br />staff will remove the % full containers and transport them to the OHU. <br />Replacement containers will immediately be available. <br />C. Transportation of Medical Waste to Disposal Area <br />Biohazard Waste shall be contained in proper containers located in <br />various medical areas throughout the institution. These areas are <br />outlined in the memorandum, dated June 30, 2010. <br />(Attachment A). <br />
