GeosyntecO
consultants
3. SAMPLE HANDLING AND CUSTODY REQUIREMENTS
Collection of environmental samples of high integrity is important to the quality of
chemical data to be generated. To this end, strict field procedures have been developed
that will be employed for the project. Detailed field activities for collecting and analyzing
samples are described in the Work Plan. Project field procedures to be used during these
activities are provided in the Sampling and Analysis Plan section of the Work Plan. A
summary of criteria to be met during the sample collection process to ensure that a
representative sample is properly collected and transported to the laboratory, including
sample containers, field preservation and holding times is provided in Table E-1.
Chain of custody procedures will be strictly adhered to during sample collection,
transportation, and laboratory handling to assure the integrity of the samples. Improper
sample and data handling and inadequate chain of custody procedures affect the
credibility and acceptability of analytical results, regardless of their accuracy or precision.
Chain of custody documentation will document the processing of the sample from the
time of collection to the time of analysis. Samples will be contained and preserved in
accordance with the instructions provided in Table E-1.
3.1 Sample Nomenclature
This section describes the sample nomenclature for groundwater collected during the field
activities described in the Work Plan. These protocols are to be used on samples labels
and chain of custody forms.
Samples will be labeled using unique sample designations based on the sampling location
code and the date collected. Groundwater samples will be labeled with the well number
followed by the date collected in a YYYYMMDD(Year,Month,Day)format. Examples
of the sample nomenclature to be utilized during this investigation are provided below.
Example (Primary Groundwater Sample):
• A groundwater sample collected from groundwater monitoring well W-001 on a
given sampling day (using 15 September 2025) would be labeled as follows:
W-001-20250915.
Quality control samples collected during this investigation will include duplicate
groundwater samples, equipment blanks, and trip blanks.
Quality Assurance Project Plan 5 30 April 2025
