2. SOIL BORINGS AND GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
2.1 Overview
The soil boring and groundwater sampling SOP was prepared to direct field personnel in
the methods for recording soil boring observations, collecting subsurface soil samples,
and collecting grab groundwater samples during Site investigations. The SOP conforms
to the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) Water Well Standards Bulletin
Numbers 74-81 and 74-90 (DWR, 1990), United States Environmental Protection
Agency (USEPA) Groundwater Sampling and Monitoring with Direct Push
Technologies (USEPA, 2005) and other pertinent technical publications. The soil boring
log and the groundwater sampling forms to be used during Site investigations are
provided in Attachment 1.
2.2 Equipment
• PPE and air monitoring equipment as required by HASP;
• Direct push sampling equipment and hand auger(provided by driller);
• Plastic sheeting;
• Soil jars and aluminum foil, and/or re-sealable plastic bags;
• Measuring tape or folding ruler at least five feet in length;
• Photoionization or flame-ionization detector(PID and FID, respectively);
• PID or FID calibration kit;
• Disposable bailers and nylon string;
• 5-gallon buckets;
• Water level meter;
• Multi-parameter water quality meter;
• Multi-parameter water quality meter calibration kit;
• Appropriate laboratory provided sample containers; and
• Coolers with ice.
2
