Headrests— Cleaning and Disinfection Protocol
Headrests come into direct contact with the client's skin and are considered high-risk touch
surfaces. All headrests must be cleaned and disinfected after each client and before reuse if
the surface has been used for any other purpose. Use of disposable barriers is recommended for
additional protection.
Before the Procedure
o Inspect headrest for cleanliness and physical integrity.
o If the headrest area has been used for any non-sterile activity (e.g., resting items,
setup), disinfect before beginning the procedure.
o Apply a disposable barrier (e.g., plastic wrap, dental bib) over the headrest
before each procedure.
After Each Procedure
o Remove and dispose of the barrier film in the appropriate waste container.
o Clean the headrest using a cloth or paper towel and mild soap/detergent if visibly
soiled.
o Disinfect using an EPA-registered disinfectant that is effective against
bloodborne pathogens (e.g., [insert disinfectant name and EPA#]).
o Allow the disinfectant to remain wet for the manufacturer-recommended
contact time, then air dry or wipe clean with a fresh towel if required.
Glove Use
o Disposable gloves are worn at all times when cleaning or disinfecting the
headrest, as per§119309(d).
3
