Material Requirements
o All headrests must be made of smooth, non-porous, and easily cleanable
materials (e.g., vinyl or metal).
o Any damaged, cracked, or torn surfaces must be repaired or replaced before
reuse.
Documentation
o Disinfection of the headrest is recorded in the Procedure Surface Cleaning Log
and includes:
• Date/time
• Staff initials
• Product used
• Barrier applied (Y/N)
6. Procedure Area—Cleaning and Disinfection Protocol
The procedure area is where all body art services are performed and must be maintained in a
clean, sanitary, and orderly condition at all times. To prevent cross-contamination and the
transmission of infectious agents, the entire procedure area must be cleaned and disinfected after
every client and before reuse if used for any other activity.
Before the Procedure
o Verify the entire procedure area(including work surfaces, trays, chairs, stools,
lighting, and equipment stands) is clean and disinfected,
o If the space has been used for any other activity (e.g., consultations, supply
restocking), disinfect all surfaces again before beginning body art.
o Apply barriers (e.g,, plastic wrap, dental bibs)to surfaces that may be touched
frequently during the procedure, such as power cords, machine grips, lamps, and
bottle tops.
During the Procedure
o Use barrier protection for equipment and surfaces when possible.
o Touch only necessary surfaces while wearing gloves.
o Any accidental contamination (e.g., blood splatter, ink spill)is immediately
cleaned and disinfected using an EPA-registered disinfectant.
After the Procedure
o Remove and discard all barrier materials and single-use items into the
appropriate waste container(biohazard waste if contaminated).
o Clean visible soil or residue from all surfaces using soap and water or detergent.
4
