6.1 Head Protection
All personnel shall wear a hard hat that meets the requirements and specifications in ANSI Safety
Requirements for Industrial Head Protection Z89.1-1969. Exceptions to this requirement are when
personnel are in eating/break areas.
6.2 Hand Protection
Outer gloves used on the Site for remedial activities shall be either petroleum resistant or general
purpose. The appropriate outer glove shall be determined for a specific work task. Inner gloves
shall always be petroleum resistant, shall be selected using appropriate degradation guides and
shall be disposed of as PPE waste. Welder's gloves or any other special types of glove are
considered outer gloves and are to be worn over inner gloves.
6.3 Eye Protection
All personnel at the Site shall wear eye protection at all times. All eye protection provided shall
be ANSI Z87. 1-1989 approved.
6.4 Footwear
Footwear shall be sturdy steel-toed work boots. Petroleum-resistant boots or outer boot covers are
to be worn when necessary.
6.5 Respiratory Protection
The primary objective of the respiratory protection program shall be to prevent atmospheric
contamination. This shall be accomplished as far as feasible by accepted engineering control
measures (for example, enclosure or confinement of the operation, general and local ventilation, and
substitution of less toxic materials and air monitoring). When effective engineering controls are not
feasible, or while they are being instituted, appropriate respirators shall be used.
To control and/or minimize the threat of occupational diseases caused by breathing air contaminated
with harmful dusts, fogs, hones, mists, gases, smokes, sprays,or vapors, respirators shall be provided
to all employees, when such equipment is necessary to protect the health of the employee.
Employees will not be assigned to tasks requiring use of respirators unless it has been determined that
they are physically able to perform the work and use the equipment. A physician shall determine
what health and physical conditions are pertinent.
Only NIOSH approved or accepted respirators shall be used. The respirator furnished shall provide
adequate respiratory protection against the particular hazard for which it is designed.
FREY Page 10
